This barrette is actually a piece of wearable art made from a dried gourd. It's great to wear either in your hair or on a hat or handbag. It is also a nice, inexpensive gourd art gift and comes in its own organdy pouch and gift box. This is my own design and is truly one-of-a-kind. It is also unique. How many times do you see jewelry made from dried gourds?
I created the barrette from a piece of a pear gourd, sanding it until it was the shape I wanted. I drilled a hole into the center so that I could attach a rare Czech glass button featuring a 24kt gold coated unicorn on a sparkling purple background. I painted pink, purple, and blue dots around the unicorn, complementing colors in the button and giving the feeling of stardust. Swarovski "gems" add extra sparkle to the barrette. The background is a gold metallic acrylic. On the back side, I glued an 80mm, French-made, automatic, clip barrette blank onto the gourd using Diamond Glaze Adhesive. The back has been left its natural color. The piece is coated with lacquer both front and back to protect it and the art. It is also signed. The barrette measures 2" wide at its widest point and is 5-1/2" long. This is a gorgeous piece that is truly one-of-a-kind. I only create one design for each barrette I make. These Czech glass unicorn buttons are rare; I've purchased whatever I find and I don't find them often. And then, I pay dearly for them. But I love unicorns!
Czech glass is collectible and a bit expensive. I recently discovered it and have fallen in love with the glowing colors and unique patterns. Czech glass is made by hand in small batches from handmade molds, some antique, and is hand painted. It is considered a cottage industry in the Czech Republic.
NOTE: Gourds by nature have blemishes, bumps, and other flaws. Any of these are simply part of the art host. I am proud to use gourds from Wuertz Gourd Farm, a family-owned, local farm in Casa Grande, AZ.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can my gourd art be kept outside?
No. My gourd art is intended for inside use only. The art will not hold up to weather and is not created to do so.
Can my gourd vases and bowls be filled with water for fresh flowers?
No. Unless I specifically state that the piece has been waterproofed, my gourd art should not be exposed to liquids including water. However, non-leaking containers for water--such as slender glass vases, etc.,--can be placed into the bowl or vase if you wish to use the piece for holding fresh flower bouquets. Just be careful to make sure there is no spillage.
There are bumps and blemishes on the gourd art. Are these defects?
No. Gourds are natural elements that will have bumps, dings, and blemishes. These are simply a part of the gourd itself.
Wholesale availability
I am a one person operation. I cannot and do not want to mass produce. I prefer NOT to become involved in wholesale.
Gift wrapping and packaging
Almost all of my art comes gift boxed and tied with a fabric ribbon. If you want the order gift wrapped, please convo me to discuss. I can also include a customized gift enclosure card. Please make sure to let me know in the "message" portion of your order if you wish to send as a gift and provide the name and address of the recipient. I try to include a copy of your receipt with each order. If the item is a gift, I will withhold the receipt unless you direct me otherwise.
Care instructions
I send a set of "care instructions" with all of my gourd art. Gourd art should be cared for in the same manner you would care for fine wood. Simply dust gently with a dry cloth. Keep the piece out of prolonged exposure to direct sunlight to ensure the colors do not fade. Keep the piece out of water.
